Title:

Equality and Intercultural Programme Officer

Reporting to:

Equality and Intercultural Programme Manager, National Youth Council of Ireland.

Location:

Official place of work is 3 Montague Street, D 2. However, working remotely is encouraged with meetings occasionally at NYCI offices (3 Montague St, Dublin 2). Out-of-office work and travel on a regional and national basis is required.

Hours of Work

Full time 35 hours per week (some flexibility will be required, such as evening/weekend work).  

Duration:

Fixed term: to 31st November 2027 (extension of contract is subject to funding).

Remuneration:

Depending on experience €39,154 - €45,469

Annual Leave:

27 days per annum pro rata

Role and Purpose:

The Equality and Intercultural Programme Officer will work as part of the NYCI Equality and Intercultural Programme to collaborate and engage with NYCI’s membership and the youth work sector, to build and deepen their understanding of intercultural and inclusive youth work practice and to counter divisive narratives that increase hate and hostility.

This is a varied role requiring good organisation, planning and multi-tasking skills, as well as excellent interpersonal skills, facilitation, resource development and training experience. The role will require face-to-face work in Ireland.

The Programme Officer will work across the two streams of the Equality and Intercultural programme – the inclusive practice stream and the Common Cause project which resources youth work’s response to rising hate and polarisation.

Key Responsibilities:

Work as an integral member of the Equality and Intercultural Programme Team to achieve our mission and play an active role in the delivery of NYCI’s Strategic Plan and meet NYCI’s objectives in relation to its intercultural, equality and inclusion work. Tasks will include:

  1. Engage youth work organisations to develop their intercultural, inclusive, and responsive youth work practice, and support them to engage more effectively with minority and marginalised young people – through training, resource development and dissemination, facilitation and network support.  

  2. Resource youth work’s response to rising hate and polarisation through research on Trans* rights and inclusion, and media literacy interventions to counter mis and dis information

  3. Build youth workers understanding of social and racial justice, and the impact systemic inequalities have on minority identity young people’s engagement in youth work.

  4. Enhance youth workers relationship with NYCI’s Equality and Intercultural Programme and its resources.

  5. Ensure the voices of minority identity young people inform policy and practice.

The project aims to achieve meaningful changes in practice which creates safer spaces for minority ethnic young people to connect and have a greater sense of belonging.

Other duties include:

Support the Equality and Intercultural Programme in relation to policy and advocacy activities as required.

Complete all related administration and reporting to ensure smooth running of work, in line with programme requirements. 

Ensure NYCI’s child protection policy and safeguarding statement is implemented.

Person Specification

 Experience/Attributes 

  • Have a third level qualification in an intercultural, equality or community and youth work or related field  - Essential

  • Have at least 3 years’ experience working in intercultural, equality or youth related work in a Youth Work or Voluntary and Community setting - Essential

  • Demonstrated commitment to Equity, Inclusion, Social and Racial Justice - Essential

  • Experience in working in partnership directly with youth workers, youth leaders, and minority identity young people - Essential

  • Experience of relationship building with a range of stakeholders - Essential

  • Experience of planning and event organisationsuch as conferences, training seminars and workshops - Desirable

  • Experience of devising, organising, and delivering training/Continuing Professional Development to the NGO sector – including in an online format - Essential

  • Have excellent interpersonal, written communication, organisational and presentation skills - Essential

  • Knowledge or experience tackling hate, hostility or extremism in youth/community setting - Desirable
